Wholesale banking is a collective term that, as its name would imply, refers to the bank-to-bank markets and instruments, often termed the inter-bank market. More often this definition is extended nowadays to include any inter-financial institution dealings including those of hedge funds and other investment companies. The term is sometimes used to include high-value dealings with non-financial corporates.
Traditional facets of this type of banking include the inter-bank money markets (where banks exchange short-term, even overnight, loans and deposits) and the foreign exchange markets. Other important markets include the repo (or sale and repurchase agreement), government debt (treasury bills and government bonds from around the world), the futures and options markets and, increasingly, the various ‘exotic’ derivatives markets that are available to professional investors.
Securities issuing and under-writing are important functions.
A characteristic of wholesale banking is the large transaction size involved. Typically transactions would be measured in millions of US dollars. The large inter-bank payments that result are normally settled through a Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system (a high value, low transaction volume system normally operated by a country’s central bank) or through other central bank account transfers.
Depending on the type of instrument involved, trading may take place in standardised sizes and according to standard terms and conditions through exchanges (such as exchange-traded futures) or ‘over-the-counter’ (OTC) when negotiated ‘bi-laterally’ between organisations (such as some swaps, options and other derivative trades).
