The term ‘trading system’ often has the connotation of ‘trading method’ or way of trading rather than referring to the computer system that is used to process trades. That computer system is often referred to as the ‘trading platform’ or ‘dealing room system’ to differentiate it from the ‘trading system’ which may be some empirical method used to assist traders in judging when to enter into buy trades and when to enter into sell trades.

The trading platform may be designed for specific types of market such as futures and options, foreign exchange, fixed income securities, derivatives, etc. and will enable traders to examine various pricing, model various scenarios and capture and execute the trade.

They will typically include some form of portfolio or history of accumulated trades that can be ‘marked-to-market’ (i.e. priced using current market prices not those at which they were traded) to show some sort of trading performance and risk management reporting.
