The term, securities, is a collective one that generally refers to shares and bonds, although other items of value may be included. The shares, or other types of equity, can be in any quoted company. Bonds are debt instruments that are issued by governments and companies.

Securities represent some form of financial claim and are generally very liquid as they are most often traded via exchanges or other intermediaries.

The purchase/sale of a security will involve two aspects – the exchange of cash and the receipt/cancellation of the security either in paper or electronic form. These steps are generically referred to as 'settlement'. The safekeeping of the security certificate is referred to as custody.

Several exchanges and clearing institutions have been established to aid the settlement process. For example, in Europe there is a pan-European organisation, Euroclear, which claims to be the world's largest settlement system for securities, covering both bonds and equities. The organisation has subsidiaries in Belgium (also its headquarters), Netherlands, UK & Ireland and France. It handles domestic settlement (i.e. within a single country) and cross-border (between different countries). Clearstream is another European organisation which not only provides settlement of securities but custody services also. In Canada, the CDSX (Canadian Depository for Securities Exchange) provides a settlement service and in the US, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) provides securities settlement facilities.

Due to the specialised nature of securities trading and the associated complexity of computer systems, many banks will consider outsourcing all or part of the processing to specialist operators. State Street Bank, Brown Brothers Harriman and Bank of New York Mellon are US banks that have traditionally provided significant services for securities processing.

The securities trading industry is striving to achieve 'straight-through processing' (STP) in which a securities trade is completely automated from order entry, through order routing (to execute, or perform the trade) to clearing and settlement. To help achieve this some industry standards have emerged such as the FIX Protocol.
