Retail banking refers to the type of banking that is most often found on the high street. It is sometimes referred to as personal banking to differentiate it from the banking services offered to commercial businesses, although in practice retail banking will generally include services to small businesses. It is the form of banking that most people are familiar with – current accounts (demand deposit accounts – DDA – in the US), savings accounts, credit cards, consumer loans and mortgages are all examples of retail banking products.

To deliver these products to the general public, a bank will make use of a combination of branch network, ATMs, telephone banking and internet banking.

A general characteristic of retail banking is that the transaction volume is high but the transaction amount is low i.e. there are a lot of small value transactions as opposed to wholesale banking where there are fewer transactions but of a higher value.

Retail banking operations must be highly efficient because of the volumes involved, so banks make extensive use of computer systems and automated equipment such as ATMs. To further improve the efficiency of processing, retail banking products are normally standardised and are offered to the public as pre-packaged ‘commoditised’ items.
