Middle office is a term that in modern banking is more conceptual than actual.
In the older model of banking, trades would be conducted in the front office and then handed to the back office for settlement and accounting. The middle office came into being with the development of risk management functions and corporate oversight requirements.
The term ‘middle office’ is still used most commonly to refer to risk management and limit checking functions.
