The term commercial banking normally refers to a bank’s activities that relate to commercial enterprises or corporations as opposed to its activities that relate to individuals.

One of the characteristics of the type of commercial banking aimed at corporates is the emphasis on the finance of trade or projects. The corporate lending transactions by commercial banks tend to be specifically structured for a particular purpose – hence the term structured finance. This type of finance might involve a syndicated lending deal where multiple banks join together to provide finance for a particular project, or creating a ‘special purpose vehicle’ – a legal entity created to facilitate a single transaction, say to build a retail shopping centre, or similar. Other financing of the international trade-cycle may make use of trade finance (also referred to as trade services) or open-account dealings.

Of increasing interest to commercial customers is the active use of free-cash balances in their group’s accounts. This is particularly so if the accounts are spread across several countries or time-zones. As a result, cash management services have become an essential offering in commercial banking. This includes sweeping (where balances are ‘swept’ out of a series of accounts and consolidated into designated receiving accounts) and notional pooling (where the balances in designated accounts are used to calculate interest or other income to the corporate without actual balances being transferred).
