Every company has a treasury function that looks after the company’s cash and investments. In some companies it is a part-time function of the accounts department but in larger companies it is a full-time function, often managing the cash flows and investing free cash balances from group companies around the world on a follow-the-sun basis.
Certainly for banks, the treasury function is highly advanced, matching incoming and outgoing cash flows and making productive use of free-cash balances.
Many banks operate what is termed a ‘matched book’ which means that the maturities, currencies and interest rates of loans match those of the deposits. The bank may wish to take a view on the future direction of a market and ‘take a position’ by un-matching part of its book. To achieve these functions, the bank’s treasury needs access to wholesale markets for short-term or long-term money, currencies and interest rates. These markets are often termed inter-bank markets.
Probably the most used inter-bank markets are the money market – where short-term loans are made and received – and the foreign exchange market – where one currency can be exchanged for another. Sometimes the money market loans can be overnight to enable a bank to meet its central bank commitments or other requirements without disturbing its existing investments. Other markets include the repo market and short-term fixed income trading that includes government securities.
These special markets were at one time only available to financial institutions but now they are being increasingly demanded by sophisticated corporations for cash management purposes. Most banks’ treasury departments will have a ‘corporate desk’ which deals directly with those corporate clients that wish to make trades through the banking system.
