Asset management refers to the management of a client's assets by a financial institution. Most often these assets will be in the form of securities or investments in communal funds such as unit trusts, mutual funds or investment trusts.

The financial institution that manages these assets may be a specialist asset management company or it may be a division of a larger full-service bank. Asset management is an integral part of private banking services offered to wealthy individuals.

Individual client accounts can be classified as discretionary (in which the asset manager has investment control) or advisory (in which the asset manager seeks permission from the client before making investments).

There is a large selection of packaged computer systems that can support asset management activities by providing portfolio management, portfolio valuations, customer documentation (statements, portfolio analysis, etc.), securities trading and custody functions.
